Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity services, from risk assessment to fractional CISO

Whoever keeps your systems running, someone still has to own the risk: set the standard, check the work, and explain it to your board, your insurer and your clients. NightFortress takes that job, without a full-time hire and without selling you anything else.

What usually prompts the call

Most engagements start with one of these four moments. Each one has a concrete first step.

  • An insurance renewal

The carrier's questionnaire asks about controls nobody can confirm.

We confirm what is in place and document the evidence behind each answer.

  • A client security review

A larger client sends a security questionnaire, and a contract waits on the answers.

We help you answer accurately, with the documentation to back it up.

  • A board or investor question

Someone asks who owns cyber risk, and there is no clear answer.

An executive risk briefing, and a named owner from then on.

  • An incident or near miss

A compromised mailbox, a fraudulent invoice, a lost laptop.

Call 202-909-8237. We help you contain it, then close the gap it came through.

How it starts

You see the scope in writing before you commit. Urgent risks are handled first, whatever the plan says.

  1. Take the free assessment, if you like

Ten yes-or-no questions, a few minutes, and the areas that need attention first shown on screen. No sign-up.

  2. Request a consultation

A 30-minute call about your situation, or your results if you took the assessment.

  3. Receive a written scope

Deliverables, timeline and terms, in writing, before you commit.

Accountable, and in writing

Every engagement runs on the Fortress Framework and ends in written work you own: risks ranked by business impact, a roadmap with owners and dates, and reporting in plain language.

  1. Establish the baseline

Map what you have: systems, accounts, data, vendors and the controls already in place.

  2. Prioritize risk

Rank findings by likelihood and business impact. Decide what must change now and what can wait.

  3. Implement controls

Make the changes with whoever runs your IT: the technical fixes and the policies behind them.

  4. Maintain and report

Hold a steady cadence, track progress, and report to leadership in plain language. Then the next baseline.

Whoever runs your IT, someone should judge whether it is safe

Keeping technology running and owning its risk are different jobs. Your IT may be run by you, one member of staff, a team or an outside provider. Someone still has to set the security standard, check the work against it and report to you on it, and the people who run it shouldn’t be the only ones checking it. That is the job we take. When we build something for you, such as a website or an automation, we hold it to the same written standard and show you the evidence.

  • Not a managed IT providerWe don't run a help desk, manage devices or sell hardware. If someone else runs your IT, we work alongside them.
  • Not an auditor or certifierWe prepare you for audits, questionnaires and assessments. We don't sign them off.
  • Not a 24/7 monitoring centerIf you need round-the-clock monitoring, we help you choose it and hold the provider to account.

Questions about cybersecurity services

More in the full FAQ

What cybersecurity services does a business actually need?

Three things before any new tool: someone who owns security risk, a current picture of where you stand, and a short list of fixes in priority order. For most businesses that means an assessment first, then either a fractional CISO or a defined remediation project. The free assessment shows where to look first.

How much do cybersecurity services cost?

We don't publish prices, because two firms of the same size can need very different work. Cost is driven by headcount and locations, the regulations and contracts you operate under, how much is already in place, and how much of the fixing we lead versus whoever runs your IT. After a 30-minute call you receive a written scope and proposal.

Do you replace our IT provider or IT staff?

No. We don't run IT. Whoever runs yours, whether that is you, your own staff or an outside provider, keeps doing so. We set the security standard, prioritize risk, check progress and report to leadership. Clear priorities usually make that work easier.

What is the difference between the free assessment and the paid risk assessment?

The free assessment is ten yes-or-no questions you answer in a few minutes, and it shows on screen which areas need attention first. The paid cybersecurity risk assessment is expert-led: we review your external exposure, systems, identities, cloud services and backups ourselves over 10 business days and brief your leadership on the findings.

Where do you work?

We're based in Arlington, Virginia, and work with businesses across Northern Virginia and Washington, DC. Much of the work is remote, with on-site sessions across the region.

How quickly can we start?

Most engagements begin within two weeks of the first call. Assessment-only work can start within days.
